Relief Psychological Services team bios
Valerie
I grew up in a rigid and demanding family. Driven by a constant need for approval, the pressure of needing to be perfect impacted my self-esteem and mental health. In my teen years I struggled with an eating disorder which soon became an unhealthy preoccupation in my life. Walking through my mental health journey allowed me to be vulnerable and find courage and strength in my story. I can understand and empathize with thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that contribute to mental health roadblocks. This helps me with my approach as a therapist to work with individuals in achieving counselling goals.

As a Registered Psychologist, I believe it is a privilege to walk alongside of you as you
embark on your healing journey. I also believe in the power of attuned relationships to
foster healing and growth. As a neurodivergent individual, I work from a neuroaffirming,
holistic, and trauma-informed approach. Within those lenses, I very much appreciate
practices that are spiritual, artful, and somatic. That said, I work with my clients in a very
collaborative manner to set and work toward therapeutic goals, using approaches most
suited to you. My aim is for you to feel seen and heard throughout the therapy process
to achieve the feeling of genuine fulfillment in your life.
I infuse many different strategies to support a variety of concerns.

My Experience
My professional journey in healthcare has been profoundly rewarding. With over 15 years of experience as a nurse, I have acquired invaluable expertise across various disciplines, including adult and geriatric acute in-patient psychiatry, surgery and community health. Completing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2013 has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of patient care. I am now pursuing my aspiration of becoming a Registered Psychologist, having recently completed a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology. I look forward to opportunities that lie ahead in this new chapter of my career.
In my leisure, I take pleasure in traveling with my family and friends. I also engage in knitting and enjoy watching thought-provoking shows and documentaries.
